The town of Stonington, located in New London County includes the borough of Stonington, the villages of Pawcatuck, Lords Point and Wequetequock, as well as the eastern halves of the villages of Mystic and Old Mystic. It is the only Connecticut town facing the Atlantic Ocean. The rocky shoreline has many peninsulas, islands, coves and marshes.
The first European colonists established a trading house in the Pawcatuck section of town in 1649. The Borough of Stonington is the oldest borough in Connecticut, incorporated in 1801. Mystic was developed around the shipbuilding industry and today is the home of Mystic Seaport and Mystic Aquarium and Institute for Exploration.
